Sonography (ultrasound)

The underlying principle to sonography is represented by ultrasonic waves – sound waves with a frequency above the audible range – which are reflected back differently by the various tissues in the body.

An ultrasonic device emits ultrasound waves, then measures the varying reflections from the different tissue, and finally processes these into a two-dimensional image of the body in different shades of grey.

With the help of sonography it is easy and absolutely painless to examine the structure of many organs such as the liver and thyroid, and also various regions of the body like the female breast.

The ultrasound examination is completely safe and can easily be used for examining pregnant women and children.
